Weight loss is always the number one New Years resolution for us humans but what about for our dogs and cats? I recently learned from my vet that over 50% of American pets are overweight. That’s 93 million dogs and cats!!! My vet also educated me on the fact that we can increase a dog’s lifespan by two years or more by keeping him healthy and without the extra pounds. So not only are we improving their quality of life but were lengthening their lifespan. Most senior pets already suffer from arthritis in the joints, so keeping them trim can really improve their comfort and ease of getting around. So what’s the secret? Reduction of calories and increasing exercise! I know, it’s easier said than done but with some determination it is definitely an attainable goal for any pet. And hey, the extra walking is good for us too. Not to mention the opportunity to spend a bit of extra time with our dogs while walking. Other options are letting them run in the park or playing with other dogs at a dog park.
